Introduction to the Northern Cape:
Covering 30% of the national territory, this province has the lowest population! The arid landscape has a spectacular raw beauty and contrast: the open plains of the Richterveld, a succulent paradise, the red dunes of the Kalahari, as well as the green banks of the Orange river... Its capital Kimberley is the diamond capital and the first mines gave its shape to the Big Hole, the largest ‘man made’ excavation in the world.
But diamonds are not the only richness of the Province:
- The ‘sea’ of wild flowers that covers the Namaqualand each year from end of August until end September is an unbelievable sight
- The Orange river gives life to the Augrabies falls, sub-divided into 19 small falls which fall over 190m into a natural ‘pool’ 43 meters deep.
- The Kalahari region is rich in History: it shelters the descendants of the San (Bushmen) who left an heritage of rock paintings and stone carving. The houses of Verneukpan form one of the latest permanent camp of the San.
- The Kgalagadi Park covers over 2 million hectares.
The population is 900.000 and the major language is Afrikaans (70%)
