Introduction to KwaZulu Natal:
The green and fertile Zulu country stretches from the Swaziland and Mozambique borders in the North until the Drakensberg mountains in the West. A breathtaking beauty, the sun shines on the cobalt blue of the Indian ocean beaches (Umhlanga, Ballito, Durban…) as well as the mangroves, lagoons and the vast indigenous forests. The North coast is famous for its St Lucia estuary and the lakes of Kosi Bay. The National Parks of St Lucia Wetlands and uKhahlamba are ‘World Heritage’ sites. In season you can observe the giant sea sea turtles laying their eggs in the sand dunes at exactly the spot where they themselves have hatched, horse riding, diving. Discover the battlefields of the Zulu wars and in the Hluhluwe Umfolozi Park, you will meet with the ‘Big 5’ in their natural habitat on a Safari.
The population of KwaZulu Natal is the highest in the country with 9.1 million. Zulu is spoken by 80% of the people, followed by English (15.8%). There is also an important Indian population (of which many are descendants of immigrant workers who came to work on the sugar cane plantations in the 19th century)
